Bangladesh, Japan Ink Defence Pact to Boost Strategic Ties

Bangladesh and Japan have taken a significant step forward in their strategic partnership with the signing of a defence equipment and technology transfer agreement. The pact, inked at Dhaka Cantonment under the supervision of the Armed Forces Division (AFD), underscores the deepening trust and coordinated vision between the two nations.

Lieutenant General S M Kamrul Hassan, Principal Staff Officer of AFD, represented Bangladesh, while Japan’s Ambassador to Dhaka, Saida Shinichi, signed on behalf of Japan. The agreement, which has been in the works since 2023, is poised to accelerate Bangladesh’s defence modernization efforts, foster joint research and development, and enhance military expert exchanges.

“This agreement is a testament to the close cooperation and mutual trust between Bangladesh and Japan,” said Lieutenant General Hassan. “It will not only strengthen our defence capabilities but also contribute to regional stability and global security.”

The pact is expected to deepen Bangladesh-Japan strategic cooperation in South Asia, further solidifying their bilateral defence ties. By promoting joint research and development, the agreement will drive innovation and technological advancements in the defence sector.

Ambassador Shinichi emphasised the long-standing friendship between the two countries, noting that the agreement reflects their shared commitment to peace and security. “This historic pact will enhance our defence collaboration and contribute to a more stable and secure South Asia,” he said.

The defence equipment and technology transfer agreement marks a new chapter in Bangladesh-Japan relations, setting the stage for enhanced cooperation and mutual growth. As both nations continue to strengthen their strategic partnership, the pact is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of defence and security in the region.
