German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has underscored the critical role of technological agility in modern warfare, marking the inauguration of a new military innovation centre in Erding, just outside Munich. The facility, designed to foster rapid technological advancements, reflects a strategic shift towards agile defence solutions in response to the evolving nature of conflict.
“Innovation is not just nice to have for the German armed forces. It is key to success,” Pistorius emphasised during the opening ceremony. His remarks highlighted the necessity for continuous adaptation and innovation, particularly in the context of rapidly advancing military technologies.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to play a pivotal role in future defence scenarios, according to Pistorius. He noted that deploying advanced technology could significantly reduce the number of human casualties. “If we send in technology first, we can keep the number of human casualties lower,” he said, highlighting the potential of AI and other technologies to transform battlefield outcomes.
Pistorius also stressed the importance of the defence industry to Germany’s economic and strategic future. He placed the defence sector on par with the country’s renowned automotive industry, stating, “Both will be crucial for our economic success over the next 15 years, but also for our importance in terms of security and foreign policy.”
