Karnataka Leads in Tech Innovation, Defence Collaboration at VTU Convocation

Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot has emphasised the pivotal role of technology in addressing the challenges faced by everyday citizens, highlighting Karnataka’s leadership in innovation and governance. Speaking at the 25th Annual Convocation (Part-2) of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Belagavi, Gehlot underscored the state’s prominence in information technology, biotechnology, space science, and higher education.

“Karnataka has always played a leading role in knowledge, innovation, and good governance,” Gehlot stated. “The youth are moving forward to achieve a ‘Developed India.’”

The convocation saw 8,702 students receive postgraduate degrees, with 96 students recognised as rank holders and 25 awarded gold medals. Rear Admiral Vikram Menon, Flag Officer Commanding of the Karnataka Naval Area (FOK), also addressed the gathering, highlighting VTU’s commitment to future-ready skill development.

“The establishment of a ‘Centre of Excellence’ in Aerospace and Defence and the proposed MTech programmes in Defence Technology reflect VTU’s dedication to equipping students with the skills needed for tomorrow’s challenges,” Menon said. He affirmed the Naval Base’s full support in signing agreements with VTU, fostering deeper collaboration between academia and defence sectors.

VTU Vice-Chancellor Prof S Vidyashankar, Registrar Prof UJ Ujwal, Prof Prasad B Rampure, members of the Academic Council, and members of the Executive Committee were also present at the event.

Gehlot’s remarks come at a time when technological advancements are increasingly being harnessed to solve real-world problems, from healthcare to infrastructure. Karnataka’s leadership in these fields positions the state as a hub for innovation, attracting investment and talent. The focus on defence technology and aerospace further aligns with national priorities, as India seeks to strengthen its defence capabilities through indigenous innovation.

The convocation not only celebrated academic achievements but also underscored the importance of aligning education with national development goals. By fostering partnerships between educational institutions and defence sectors, VTU is paving the way for students to contribute meaningfully to India’s technological and defence advancements.
