Bangladesh, Japan Boost Ties with Defence Tech Transfer Deal

Bangladesh and Japan have taken a significant step forward in their bilateral relationship, signing an agreement on the transfer of defence equipment and technology. This move is poised to accelerate Bangladesh’s defence modernisation efforts and strengthen strategic ties between the two nations.

The agreement was formally signed at Dhaka Cantonment under the oversight of the Armed Forces Division (AFD). Lt Gen SM Kamrul Hasan, principal staff officer of the AFD, represented Bangladesh, while Japanese Ambassador Saida Shinichi signed on behalf of Japan. In a statement, the AFD highlighted that the agreement would elevate the long-standing friendship and strategic partnership between the two countries to new heights.

“The agreement is a product of the interim government’s far-sighted and effective diplomacy,” the AFD noted. It added that the deal was concluded in full conformity with the principles of the United Nations Charter, ensuring a framework for acquiring advanced technology and defence equipment, alongside joint research and development initiatives.

The signing of this agreement follows close and continuous efforts by both nations since 2023. It is expected to facilitate the exchange of military experts between Bangladesh and Japan, fostering greater collaboration and knowledge sharing in the defence sector.

“This agreement will create an institutional framework for acquiring advanced technology and defence equipment, alongside joint research and development,” the AFD statement read. “It will also increase the exchange of military experts between Bangladesh and Japan.”

The deal underscores the growing importance of defence diplomacy in shaping regional security dynamics. By leveraging Japan’s technological prowess and Bangladesh’s strategic location, both countries aim to enhance their defence capabilities and contribute to regional stability.

This agreement not only strengthens the bilateral relationship but also sets a precedent for future collaborations in defence and technology. As Bangladesh continues to modernise its military, the partnership with Japan will play a crucial role in achieving its strategic objectives and maintaining a robust defence posture.
