IIT Ropar, Indian Army Collaborate on Defence Tech MTech Programme

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar has signed a landmark memorandum of agreement with the Indian Army to launch a Master of Technology (MTech) programme in Defence Technology. This initiative, designed specifically for officers of the Armoured Corps Centre and School (ACC&S), underscores a strategic collaboration aimed at advancing education and research in defence technology.

The MTech (Defence Technology) programme, jointly developed by ACC&S and IIT Ropar, is tailored to align academic training with the specific needs of the military. The curriculum emphasises applied learning, hands-on research, and innovation-driven problem-solving, equipping officers for technology-led roles within the armed forces.

Rajeev Ahuja, Director of IIT Ropar, highlighted the transformative potential of this partnership. “By bringing together the intellectual rigour of IIT Ropar with the operational excellence of the Indian Army, we are creating a unique model that will produce defence technology leaders capable of driving India’s self-reliance in critical defence sectors,” Ahuja said. “This is our contribution to Viksit Bharat 2047.”

Upon successful completion of the programme, officers will receive a degree from IIT Ropar, enabling them to spearhead technological modernisation initiatives across armoured formations and significantly contribute to indigenisation efforts in defence manufacturing.

The memorandum of agreement establishes a comprehensive framework for joint research and development initiatives, addressing critical technological challenges in India’s defence sector. Key focus areas include next-generation armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) technologies, advanced armament solutions, new materials, and technologies for armoured platforms.

This collaboration marks a paradigm shift in India’s approach to defence technology education, fostering a deeper integration between academic institutions and military organisations. By leveraging the strengths of both IIT Ropar and the Indian Army, the programme aims to produce leaders who can drive innovation and self-sufficiency in India’s defence capabilities.

The partnership not only enhances the technical expertise of military officers but also strengthens the nation’s defence infrastructure, aligning with the vision of a self-reliant India by 2047.
