The UK government has unveiled a new defence innovation fund aimed at accelerating the development of cutting-edge military technology by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This initiative, backed by a record increase in defence spending, aims to open up new opportunities for British businesses to contribute to national security while fostering economic growth and job creation.
Defence Secretary John Healey emphasised the strategic importance of the fund, stating, “Backed by our record sustained increase in defence spending, we are delivering good jobs and growth across the UK by opening up new routes into the defence sector, giving small British-based businesses the jumpstart they deserve.” The contracts awarded through this fund will be driven by the needs of the UK armed forces, with UK Defence Innovation (UKDI) leading the charge in identifying and developing leading-edge technologies.
UKDI will focus on several key areas, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, robotics, autonomy, and enhanced precision weapons. This targeted approach ensures that the technologies developed are directly aligned with the operational requirements of the military, enhancing the UK’s defence capabilities.
“If our entrepreneurs are willing to take chances, we must be willing to take them too,” Healey added. “This is about a Britain that rewards risk-takers and innovators and gives people the belief that this government will back them.”
The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from the business community. Naomi Hulme, CEO and co-founder of UK software company Skyral, commented, “This fund signals the MOD’s recognition of a reality British SMEs have always known. We are capable of delivering cutting-edge capabilities faster and more efficiently than traditional procurement models allow.”
Hulme’s statement underscores the potential of the fund to streamline the procurement process and bring innovative technologies to the forefront more quickly. However, she also highlighted the importance of execution: “The question is now one of execution. Accelerated procurement only matters if proven technologies make it into service, not just more pilots that stall after the initial development.”
She continued, “If this fund creates genuine pathways from contract to deployed capability, it will turn defence spending into genuine advantage for our personnel. That’s how procurement reform yields true impact.”
To further support SMEs, the Ministry of Defence has launched the new Office of Small Business Growth. This office is designed to make it easier for small businesses to navigate the complexities of MOD procurement and to bring in new suppliers, fostering a more inclusive and dynamic defence industry.

By leveraging the agility and creativity of SMEs, the UK aims to maintain its position at the forefront of military technology and ensure that its armed forces are equipped with the best possible tools to defend national interests.
