The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar has taken a significant step towards bolstering India’s defence capabilities by signing a memorandum of agreement with the Indian Army. This collaboration aims to launch a Master of Technology (MTech) programme in Defence Technology, specifically designed for officers of the Armoured Corps Centre and School (ACC&S).
The MTech (Defence Technology) programme is a joint effort between ACC&S and IIT Ropar, tailored to align academic training with the specific needs of the military. The curriculum emphasises applied learning, hands-on research, and innovation-driven problem-solving, preparing officers for technology-led roles within the armed forces.
Rajeev Ahuja, Director of IIT Ropar, highlighted the transformative potential of this partnership. “By bringing together the intellectual rigour of IIT Ropar with the operational excellence of the Indian Army, we are creating a unique model that will produce defence technology leaders capable of driving India’s self-reliance in critical defence sectors. This is our contribution to Viksit Bharat 2047,” Ahuja said.
Upon successful completion of the programme, officers will be awarded a degree from IIT Ropar, enabling them to spearhead technological modernisation initiatives across armoured formations and contribute significantly to indigenisation efforts in defence manufacturing.
The memorandum of agreement establishes a comprehensive framework for joint research and development initiatives, addressing critical technological challenges in India’s defence sector. The partnership will focus on several strategic areas, including next-generation armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) technologies, advanced armament solutions, and new materials for armoured platforms.
This collaboration marks a paradigm shift in how India approaches defence technology education. By integrating academic excellence with military operational expertise, the programme aims to produce leaders who can drive innovation and self-reliance in India’s defence sector. The initiative aligns with the broader vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, aiming to position India as a global leader in defence technology and manufacturing.
