Ukraine’s rapid technological advancements during the ongoing conflict have positioned the country as a leader in Europe’s defence innovation landscape. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted this transformation during a dialogue with participants of the Forum of Talented Youth in Kyiv, emphasising the pivotal role of drones in modern warfare and Ukraine’s emergence as a technological hub.
“During the war, Ukraine has greatly advanced in technology. We are the number one in Europe in terms of technology, that’s a fact,” Zelenskyy stated, underscoring the nation’s leadership in drone manufacturing and electronic warfare systems. He noted that 90% of enemy losses are attributed to drones, marking a significant shift from traditional artillery reliance. “The front is precisely a technological hub, the central technological hub in Europe,” Zelenskyy asserted, highlighting the Ukrainian front’s role in driving technological innovation.
The president also stressed the importance of leveraging the frontline experience to enhance foreign weapons and new technologies. He emphasised the critical role of human capital and the need to preserve the expertise and know-how gained during the conflict. “In peacetime, all this is needed above all. All those people, the know-how, the experience must not be lost,” Zelenskyy said, pointing out that these resources are essential for future developments and production.
Ukraine’s technological advancements extend beyond the battlefield. Zelenskyy noted the growing demand for security in various sectors, including engineering, medicine, cybersecurity, and space technologies. He envisions Ukraine becoming a technological hub in these areas, driving innovation and ensuring global competitiveness.
“Undoubtedly, defence technologies drive others. What works on the front will, in peacetime, work for peaceful processes,” Zelenskyy explained. He highlighted that frontline medicine, demining technologies, and drone innovations will transition to civilian use post-war, contributing to Ukraine’s economic and technological growth.
Despite these advancements, Zelenskyy acknowledged the challenges posed by the ongoing war and legal and financial constraints. He expressed confidence in Ukraine’s potential to become the backbone of a united Europe, provided these obstacles are overcome. The country continues to develop its technological potential, linking defence innovations with civilian opportunities to spur growth and ensure future competitiveness on the global market.
