In a strategic move to capitalize on Canada’s growing defence ambitions, former Liberal defence minister Harjit Sajjan has joined forces with tech entrepreneur Hunter Scharfe to launch Juno Industries Inc. This new defence-technology company aims to develop autonomous systems that bolster Canadian and allied national security, sovereignty, and defence capabilities.
Sajjan, who serves as the company’s co-founder and executive chairman, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Since my time as national minister of defence, I’ve stressed the need for predictability, certainty, and a clear path forward to strengthen our military and defence sector. We are now seeing the early foundations of that vision take shape, and I believe the team at Juno Industries has the talent, know-how, and capital to help advance innovation in Canada and among allied partners.”
Juno Industries is launching with a significant $3 million in seed funding, underscoring the confidence investors have in its mission. The company’s advisory board includes distinguished figures such as Lt. Gen. Michael Hood, a retired senior Royal Canadian Air Force officer, robotics expert Vincent Clerc, and entrepreneur Paul Sparkes. Among its investors is quantum physicist Geordie Rose, founder of D-Wave and Sanctuary AI, who also serves as a senior advisor to the company.
The timing of Juno Industries’ launch aligns with Canada’s recent commitment to increase defence-related spending to 5% of its GDP by 2035, a pledge made under NATO. This commitment has sparked a surge in interest in military product development, positioning Canada to become a key player in the global defence technology sector.
Hunter Scharfe highlighted the broader implications of this initiative, noting, “We are in the opening innings of a generational growth cycle in defence technology. Juno Industries is focused on strengthening sovereignty and improving security outcomes for Canadians and our allies.”
Sajjan’s background as a former Canadian Armed Forces member and his extensive political career, including roles as defence minister, international development minister, and emergency preparedness minister under the Justin Trudeau government, brings a wealth of experience to Juno Industries. His leadership, combined with the expertise of the company’s advisors and investors, positions Juno Industries at the forefront of Canada’s defence technology innovation.
