Azerbaijan, Vietnam Boost Defence Ties with High-Level Talks

Azerbaijan and Vietnam are taking significant steps to strengthen their defence cooperation, as evidenced by a high-level meeting between Azerbaijani and Vietnamese officials. Vugar Mustafayev, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Defence Industry, recently engaged in discussions with the leadership of Vietnam’s General Department of Defence Industry and the state-owned Viettel Group. The talks focused on expanding collaboration in defence manufacturing and military technology, marking a pivotal moment in the bilateral relationship.

The discussions centred on a range of strategic areas, including industrial capabilities, workforce development, and the sharing of technology and expertise. Both parties explored the feasibility of launching joint production initiatives, reflecting a shared commitment to enhancing their defence sectors through collaboration.

Mustafayev was given a comprehensive presentation of Vietnam’s military products, which highlighted their technical specifications and operational capabilities. This was followed by a visit to one of Vietnam’s key defence industry factories. During the tour, Mustafayev was briefed on the production processes, modern technologies in use, and the stringent quality control mechanisms in place.

Both sides underscored the importance of these meetings in advancing their defence cooperation. “The meetings held during the visit will contribute to the development of defence cooperation between Azerbaijan and Vietnam, the implementation of mutually beneficial projects, and the advancement of the strategic partnership to a new level,” stated the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence Industry.

Azerbaijan and Vietnam have enjoyed a strong diplomatic relationship since establishing ties on September 23, 1992. Their cooperation has been characterised by trust, equality, and mutual respect. In May 2025, both nations agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership, committing to deepen collaboration across political, economic, and cultural sectors.

Vietnam’s leadership has described Azerbaijan as a key regional partner, emphasising the importance of expanding collaboration in areas of mutual interest. This strategic alignment aims to foster prosperity and stability for both nations.

The recent discussions between Mustafayev and Vietnamese officials signal a promising future for defence cooperation. By leveraging each other’s strengths in technology, manufacturing, and workforce development, Azerbaijan and Vietnam are poised to achieve significant advancements in their defence capabilities. This partnership not only strengthens their individual military industries but also contributes to regional security and stability.

As both nations continue to explore joint production initiatives and share expertise, their strategic partnership is set to reach new heights. The commitment to mutual growth and cooperation underscores the potential for long-term benefits, reinforcing their roles as key players in the global defence sector.
