China’s military advancements have once again captured global attention, with significant developments in its naval and aerial capabilities. Here’s a look at some of the most notable stories from the past year, as reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

China’s third and most advanced aircraft carrier, the Fujian, officially entered service this week. The carrier, named after China’s coastal Fujian province, was commissioned at a grand ceremony in Sanya, Hainan province, according to state media reports. The Fujian represents a major leap forward in China’s naval capabilities, featuring advanced technologies that are expected to bolster its presence in the South China Sea and beyond. The carrier’s induction underscores China’s ongoing efforts to modernise its military and project power in the region.

In another significant development, China’s J-10C fighter jet made headlines after reports suggested it outperformed France’s Rafale in a dogfight between the Indian and Pakistani air forces. The clash, which took place on May 7, drew global attention as the Rafale, known for its advanced avionics and combat prowess, was reportedly bested by the Chinese-made J-10C Vigorous Dragon. This event has sparked discussions about the evolving capabilities of China’s military aircraft and their growing influence on the global stage.

Meanwhile, China’s nuclear deterrence capabilities have also seen advancements with the debut of the Jinglei-1 (JL-1) long-range missile. According to analysts, the JL-1, which can be carried on a modified H-6N strategic bomber, completes China’s nuclear triad, providing a formidable deterrent across air, sea, and land. This development is seen as a significant step in enhancing China’s strategic strike capabilities and ensuring its nuclear forces remain a credible and effective deterrent.

These stories highlight China’s relentless pursuit of military modernization and its growing influence in global defence dynamics. As China continues to invest heavily in its military capabilities, the world watches closely, anticipating further advancements and strategic shifts in the years to come.
