Cairo, Egypt — The Egypt Defence Expo (EDEX) 2025 kicked off in Cairo on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, drawing delegations from over 100 countries. The multi-day event serves as a global stage for showcasing advanced weapons systems and cutting-edge security technologies from leading manufacturers worldwide. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi inaugurated the event, which features more than 450 exhibitors, including prominent defence companies and military technology innovators.
Amidst the bustling exhibition halls, Somalia’s defence leadership is actively seeking new military partnerships and technology upgrades to bolster its ongoing operations against al-Shabab and Islamic State militants. Defence Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, Somali National Army Chief Gen. Odowaa Yusuf Rageh, and a delegation of senior military officers are representing Somalia at EDEX 2025.
“Upgraded defence technology is essential as Somali forces assume more responsibility for national security,” said Defence Minister Fiqi. The Somali delegation plans to engage in high-level discussions with government representatives, defence manufacturers, and military advisers throughout the exhibition. These talks are expected to focus on expanded training programs, technical cooperation, and potential equipment acquisitions aimed at modernising Somalia’s armed forces.
Somalia’s push for advanced military technology comes as the country continues to face significant security challenges. Officials emphasise that better equipment, surveillance tools, and logistical support are crucial for sustaining pressure on armed groups that continue to threaten major population centres.
