In a move to address public concerns over the absence of key security officials amid ongoing national challenges, the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has provided clarity on the whereabouts and duties of Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar. Minister Matawalle confirmed that Minister Badaru is attending the 2025 Dubai International Airshow, an event approved by the President, alongside other high-ranking military personnel representing Nigeria.
The Dubai Airshow, a premier global event for the aerospace, space, and defence industries, offers a crucial platform for fostering business growth, showcasing innovative technologies, and promoting international collaboration. This biennial event brings together political leaders, innovators, and officials from various governments to exchange ideas and strengthen global defence partnerships.
Minister Matawalle emphasized that Minister Badaru’s attendance at the airshow is not a sign of disengagement from Nigeria’s security challenges but rather an essential part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance the nation’s defence capabilities. “Minister Badaru’s official engagement abroad does not diminish our sensitivity or response to the current security situation at home. Our combined efforts will ensure that we continue to address these challenges effectively,” Minister Matawalle stated.
The Nigerian delegation at the Dubai Airshow aims to highlight the country’s advancements in defence technology and reinforce its commitment to active participation in global defence discussions and collaborations. This strategic engagement underscores Nigeria’s dedication to leveraging international partnerships to bolster its defence sector.
Amid concerns over the recent abduction of school students, Minister Matawalle reassured the public of the government’s unwavering commitment to their safe return. “As I mentioned previously, I immediately condemned the abduction and called for our security agencies to coordinate their efforts for the safe return of the students. Our strategies are in place, and we are in constant communication with the relevant authorities to facilitate their safe release,” he said.
Minister Matawalle also highlighted the advantages of having a two-minister structure in key ministries, which allows for continuous operations and effective governance even when one minister is away on official duties. “We are fortunate to have a two-minister structure in some ministries. This allows us to maintain momentum in our operations, regardless of any minister’s travel for official duties,” he explained.
While Minister Badaru is abroad, Minister Matawalle assured the public that he remains fully committed to addressing the nation’s security challenges and implementing necessary measures. “Rest assured, we are doing everything possible to ensure the swift and safe return of the students,” he promised.
Upon his return, Minister Badaru will actively participate in ongoing efforts to resolve the pressing security issues facing the nation. This coordinated approach ensures that Nigeria’s defence and security interests are continuously advanced, both domestically and on the international stage.
