The Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) are on the cusp of a significant transformation, with the upcoming launch of the Cyber and Electronic Defence Command set to redefine the nation’s defence capabilities. Deputy Defence Minister B. announced that this pivotal initiative will be officially unveiled this December, marking a decisive step toward a smart military future.
During an oral question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat, the Deputy Defence Minister emphasised the strategic importance of this new command. “This cyber command will serve as the centre of gravity for cyber and electromagnetic operations, while the Future Forces concept will shape doctrines, structures and high-technology assets capable of operating in a digital battlespace,” he stated. This transformation is part of Malaysia’s broader defence strategy, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI), automated weapon systems, and strengthened cyber warfare capabilities.
The development of the Cyber and Electronic Defence Command will be implemented in phases under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). This phased approach ensures a structured and systematic integration of advanced technologies into the nation’s defence framework. The initiative underscores Malaysia’s commitment to staying ahead in the rapidly evolving digital battlespace.
In response to a supplementary question from Muhammad Ismi Mat Taib (PN–Parit) regarding the reskilling of ATM personnel to operate increasingly complex automated and AI-driven systems, Deputy Defence Minister B. outlined eight key areas of focus. These areas include the application of AI in land, sea, and air surveillance, military drone operations, cyber defence, smart weapon systems, and unmanned vehicles. Additionally, AI will be integrated into communication and intelligence systems, training simulators, and logistics management.
The Deputy Defence Minister’s remarks highlight the comprehensive nature of Malaysia’s defence transformation.
