The Royal Australian Navy is set to significantly enhance its underwater defence capabilities with the integration of Ultra Maritime’s Surface Ship Torpedo Defence (SSTD) system into its Hunter class frigates. This development comes as BAE Systems Maritime Australia has awarded Ultra Maritime a contract to equip the frigates with cutting-edge technology designed to counter underwater threats, particularly torpedoes.
The SSTD system leverages advanced acoustic detection methods and integrated countermeasures, providing the Hunter class frigates with a robust anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capability. The system’s sonar technology and decoys work in tandem to identify and neutralize torpedo threats. By analyzing acoustic signatures, the SSTD can recommend evasive actions such as zig-zag maneuvers or sharp turns, thereby enhancing the frigates’ ability to protect Australia’s maritime interests.
Ultra Maritime, headquartered in Mawson Lakes, South Australia, will also supply the Bow Sonar, which offers medium-range active and passive sonar capabilities for detecting submarines. This dual-role technology underscores the comprehensive approach to bolstering the Royal Australian Navy’s underwater surveillance and defence mechanisms.
Andy Coxall, BAE Systems Maritime Australia’s Delivery Director – Acquisition, emphasized the strategic importance of the Hunter class frigates in safeguarding Australia’s maritime security. “The Hunter class frigates are pivotal in protecting our shores and securing critical maritime routes and undersea infrastructure,” he stated. Coxall highlighted Ultra Maritime’s global leadership in anti-submarine warfare, noting that their technology is essential for equipping the frigates with next-generation naval capabilities. This partnership not only enhances the Hunter class frigate program but also strengthens Australia’s sovereign defence capabilities and bolsters the national defence supply chain.
Jonathan Sadleir, Vice President and General Manager of Ultra Maritime’s Australian division, expressed pride in contributing to the safety of naval ships and crews. “This award is a testament to our commitment to expanding the capabilities of both manned and unmanned vessels with our innovative anti-submarine warfare technologies,” Sadleir said. He added that this contract aligns with a broader strategy to support future maritime programs under the AUKUS defence pact, which includes Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The integration of Ultra Maritime’s SSTD system into the Hunter class frigates represents a significant leap forward in Australia’s naval defence strategy. This advancement fortifies the nation’s maritime security and underscores its commitment to fostering domestic industry capabilities. By leveraging advanced ASW technologies, the Royal Australian Navy is better prepared to address contemporary and future maritime threats effectively.
The collaboration between BAE Systems and local suppliers like Ultra Maritime not only enhances the Hunter class frigate program but also reinforces Australia’s sovereign defence capabilities. This partnership is crucial for growing Australia’s undersea warfare capabilities, ensuring that the Royal Australian Navy remains at the forefront of maritime defence innovation. As the nation continues to invest in advanced defence technologies, the integration of Ultra Maritime’s SSTD system marks a pivotal step in securing Australia’s maritime future.
