UAVs Transform Defence Comms with VHF Relay Breakthrough

The integration of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) into modern communication systems is revolutionizing the way ground personnel operate, particularly in defence and emergency response scenarios. A recent study conducted by researchers Boris Galkin, Lester Ho, Ken Lyons, Gokhan Celik, and Holger Claussen explores the feasibility of using UAVs as relay stations for Very High Frequency (VHF) band communication, a technology that could significantly enhance the operational capabilities of organizations like the Irish Defence Forces (DF).

The study, part of the MISTRAL project, focuses on leveraging the unique advantages of UAVs, particularly their ability to exploit strong Line-of-Sight (LoS) channels for radio propagation. By positioning UAVs at high altitudes, the researchers aim to extend the communication range of ground-based personnel, overcoming the limitations imposed by terrain and obstacles.

The experimental setup involved a UAV equipped with a lightweight Software-Defined Radio (SDR) receiver, positioned at an altitude of 500 meters above ground. Two 5W transmitters were placed in vehicles moving on the ground, allowing the researchers to measure the received signal power and the corresponding Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates. This setup enabled the team to assess the signal path loss over varying distances.

The results of the experiment were promising, demonstrating successful signal reception at distances exceeding 50 kilometers. Although some signal degradation due to obstacle blockage and multipath effects was observed, the overall performance represented a substantial improvement over traditional ground-based communication systems. This validates the potential of UAVs to support wide-area emergency and defence communications, providing a robust and reliable relay system for ground personnel.
