Western Australia’s defence industry has once again taken centre stage, with the fifth annual WA Defence Industry Gala Dinner drawing a record crowd of over 900 attendees to Perth’s Optus Stadium. The event, hosted by the Henderson Alliance and the Australian Industry & Defence Network (AIDN) WA, celebrated the state’s world-class expertise in defence technology, shipbuilding, and advanced manufacturing.
Defence Industries Minister Paul Papalia presented two prestigious awards at the gala: the Minister’s Award for Excellence in Defence Industry (SME) and the Minister’s Award for Services to Defence Industry (Individual). The former recognises a small-to-medium enterprise that embodies the best of Western Australia and the defence industry through innovation, success, and commitment. The latter honours an individual who has demonstrated defence values and exceptional leadership over many years of service to the defence community.
The Minister’s Award for Excellence in Defence Industry (SME) was presented to a WA-made autonomous technology and shipbuilding leader. The company’s innovative solutions have significantly enhanced Australia’s national security and supported thousands of local jobs. The Minister’s Award for Services to Defence Industry (Individual) was awarded to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the defence sector over many years.
In his address, Minister Papalia highlighted Western Australia’s growing role in the nation’s defence landscape. “The State continues to cement its position as Australia’s defence manufacturing powerhouse, supporting local jobs and diversifying the economy,” he said. He also thanked the industry for its vital role and congratulated the award winners, stating, “This is just the beginning. Big things are happening in Western Australia, from the Submarine Rotational Force – West to next-generation frigates, the Henderson Defence Precinct, and AUKUS. Only WA’s defence sector can make it all happen.”
The gala dinner was made possible by the support of sponsors, including Austal, Defence West, Babcock, ASC, and many others. The event underscored the importance of collaboration and innovation in the defence industry, as well as the significant contributions of Western Australia to the nation’s security and economic prosperity.
