Indian Air Force Veteran Honored for Advancing Indigenous Aviation

The Indian Air Force has extended its congratulations to Air Marshal Philip Rajkumar (Retd) for receiving the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in the Science and Technology category, a recognition that underscores his pivotal role in advancing India’s indigenous defence aviation programs. This honour highlights his enduring legacy in shaping the nation’s aerospace capabilities and fostering self-reliance in combat aircraft development.

As a pioneering test pilot and former Commandant of the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE), Air Marshal Rajkumar played a defining role in the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) project. His leadership as Project Director at the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) was instrumental in steering the Tejas from its prototype phase to successful flight trials. His technical expertise and visionary approach were critical in overcoming the challenges of indigenous fighter aircraft development, ultimately establishing India as a capable player in combat aviation.

A veteran of the 1965 War, Air Marshal Rajkumar’s career was marked by decades of service, innovation, and unwavering dedication to the Indian Air Force. Even after retirement, he remained deeply engaged in the aerospace sector, contributing through research, writing, and mentorship.
