Thailand’s Ministry of Defence has taken a decisive step towards bolstering its defence technology capabilities with the establishment of the Defence Science, Technology, and Defence (DSTD). This strategic move aims to streamline security research, reduce reliance on foreign military equipment, and foster innovation within the country’s defence sector.
The DSTD will serve as the central hub for coordinating and managing security research, ensuring that defence research aligns with the military’s operational needs. “Our primary goal is to integrate security research, eliminate duplication, and implement a comprehensive management approach,” stated a senior official from the Ministry of Defence. This consolidation effort is expected to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in defence technology development.
One of the DSTD’s key objectives is to reduce Thailand’s heavy dependence on imported technologies and military equipment, which currently stands at an alarming 98%. By focusing on domestic research and development, the DSTD aims to strengthen the country’s self-sufficiency in defence capabilities. This shift is not only strategic but also economically beneficial, as it stimulates local industries and creates high-skilled jobs.
The DSTD’s mission spans a broad spectrum, from basic research to the commercial and social application of security technologies. The focus will be on non-classified yellow-level research and dual-use security research, ensuring that the outcomes are both practical and widely applicable. This approach aligns with the Science, Research and Innovation Promotion Act of 2019, which emphasizes the importance of innovation and research in driving national development.
To ensure continuity in defence innovation, the DSTD has proposed the establishment of the Defence and Military Energy Industry Centre. This centre will take over research and innovation efforts once the Prime Minister’s Unit (PMU) status is granted. “The Defence and Military Energy Industry Centre will play a crucial role in sustaining our defence innovation ecosystem,” said the official. This proactive measure underscores Thailand’s commitment to long-term strategic planning in defence technology.
With the necessary personnel, testing facilities, and organisational support already in place, the DSTD is well-positioned to drive significant advancements in Thailand’s defence capabilities. By fostering a robust domestic defence industry, the DSTD will not only enhance national security but also position Thailand as a key player in the global defence technology landscape. This initiative marks a pivotal moment in Thailand’s journey towards self-reliance and technological sovereignty in the defence sector.
