India has taken a significant stride in bolstering its defence capabilities with a new partnership between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Pune-based Sagar Defence Engineering. The agreement centres on the production of the Unexploded Ordnance Handling Robot (UXOR), a cutting-edge system designed to neutralise unexploded bombs safely and efficiently. This collaboration underscores India’s commitment to advancing its defence technology through public-private partnerships and the “Make in India” initiative.
Under the agreement, Sagar Defence Engineering will collaborate with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to manufacture additional UXOR robots for the Indian Air Force (IAF). The Defence Ministry highlighted that this partnership aligns with the broader goal of fostering self-reliance in defence production. Beyond mere manufacturing, the deal includes a Technology Transfer (ToT) agreement, which will facilitate the exchange of designs, software, manufacturing processes, and testing methodologies. This collaborative approach is expected to strengthen India’s defence ecosystem by integrating the expertise of both public and private sectors.
The UXOR robot, developed by DRDO scientists, is equipped with advanced features that make it a game-changer in explosive ordnance disposal. Capable of handling unexploded bombs weighing up to 1,000 kilograms, the robot employs water-jet cutting tools to penetrate bomb shells up to 25 mm thick. Operators can control the UXOR from a safe distance of two kilometres, minimising risk to personnel. Its cross-terrain mobility allows it to navigate rough terrain, airstrips, and concrete surfaces, making it versatile for various military environments.
Field trials conducted with the IAF have demonstrated the UXOR’s precision and reliability, confirming its readiness for real-world deployment. The IAF plans to utilise these robots at forward bases and other high-risk locations to enhance safety and operational efficiency.
This partnership not only advances India’s defence technology but also sets a precedent for future collaborations between government agencies and private enterprises. By fostering innovation and self-sufficiency, India is positioning itself as a formidable player in the global defence landscape.
