IBM UK has secured a £320 million ($430 million) contract to revolutionise the UK Ministry of Defence’s logistics infrastructure, marking a pivotal shift in how the military manages its equipment and supply chains. The contract, awarded to replace 17 outdated systems with a single, AI-driven digital platform, underscores the UK’s commitment to modernising its defence capabilities amid evolving global threats.
The Defence Equipment Engineering Asset Management System (DEEAMS) will provide real-time insights into maintenance, stock levels, repairs, and engineering planning. By leveraging artificial intelligence, the platform will predict when equipment requires servicing, ensuring that the right tools and vehicles are available precisely when needed. This capability is critical for maintaining operational readiness, particularly as the UK faces increasing pressures on its defence supply chains.
DEEAMS is expected to support over 65,000 users and manage more than 130 major pieces of military equipment, from armoured vehicles to aircraft and naval assets. The system’s predictive analytics will not only enhance efficiency but also reduce downtime, allowing military personnel to focus on mission-critical tasks rather than logistical challenges.
The contract is part of the UK government’s broader Plan for Change, which aims to boost domestic growth through defence technology investments. Defence Minister Luke Pollard emphasised the strategic importance of the project, stating, “We are revolutionising how we provide our front-line personnel with the kit they need, when they need it, whether they’re operating at home or deployed overseas.”
The move aligns with the UK’s Strategic Defence Review, which called for more streamlined, digital, and resilient military support systems. As the UK increases its defence spending—targeting 2.7 percent of GDP by 2027 with ambitions to push it higher in the next Parliament—projects like DEEAMS are central to ensuring long-term operational effectiveness.
Beyond its immediate benefits, DEEAMS is expected to deliver over £1 billion ($1.3 billion) in savings and efficiencies through lower support and IT costs over time. The project will also create over 100 skilled jobs, reinforcing the UK’s position as a leader in defence innovation and technology.
