The defence sector is undergoing a seismic shift, driven by the rapid evolution of AI-powered threats and the urgent need for advanced countermeasures. As institutions scramble to bolster their security infrastructure, defence tech funding has surged to approximately $28 billion in 2025, with venture capital flooding into startups specializing in autonomous systems and counter-drone technologies. This influx of investment is positioning specialized companies to capitalize on the transition from experimental technologies to mission-critical defence infrastructure.
VisionWave Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: VWAV) is at the forefront of this transformation, demonstrating what defence technology analysts call “precision at speed” during a recent five-day live-fire trial at Tawazun Industrial Park in Abu Dhabi. The California-based company’s 4D super-resolution radar, powered by its proprietary Evolved Intelligence (EI™) edge engine, achieved millisecond track initiation and low false-positive rates against aerial and ballistic threats in operationally representative conditions. These results position VisionWave as a key player in the development of next-generation Active Protection Systems (APS) solutions.
“The system demonstrated real-time detection, classification, and tracking capabilities across diverse threat profiles from small-arms ammunition to hypersonic-class targets,” said Noam Kenig, CEO of VisionWave. “Our EI™-powered 4D super-resolution radar is built to detect, classify, and track fast, hard-to-detect threats in real time. It combines accurate, multi-threat sensing, a wide field of view, high frame rates, and latency in the tens of milliseconds, along with very high resolution that differentiates it from conventional radars.”
VisionWave’s strategic vision extends beyond its core technology. The company has entered into a joint venture with Israeli defence firm AIPHEX LTD, valued internally at approximately $5 billion for equity allocation purposes. AIPHEX brings combat-validated multi-physics AI and autonomous missile technologies proven with the Israel Defense Forces, while VisionWave contributes its Evolved Intelligence platform and autonomous aerial systems. The partnership structure reveals serious business intent, with 11 specific “Designated Projects” already in advanced negotiation stages and 13 additional “Background Projects” under discussion.
The company’s intellectual property foundation centers on its trademarked Evolved Intelligence system for real-time edge autonomy. VisionWave demonstrated operational agility by filing USPTO responses within six days of office actions. Its multi-patented Vision-RF technology transforms radio signals into real-time video, potentially enabling detection capabilities that see through walls, underground, or across various operational environments.
“EI™ is built for deterministic, low-latency decisions at the edge,” said Dr. Danny Rittman, Chief Technology Officer of VisionWave. “Our patent-pending multi-planar RF-to-image sensing architecture synchronizes phased arrays with on-device inference to reconstruct high-fidelity target signatures from sparse emissions, cutting clutter and boosting range and precision.”
VisionWave’s strategic moves come as defence organizations worldwide scramble for AI-powered capabilities that can operate across air, land, sea, and space environments. The company’s Evolved Intelligence platform integrates super-resolution radar, multispectral imaging, and radio-frequency technologies with AI-driven autonomy systems designed for exactly these multi-domain operations.
Meanwhile, V2X, Inc. (NYSE: VVX) has successfully completed its strategic acquisition of QinetiQ’s U.S. Intelligence business for approximately $24 million net of estimated tax benefits. The transaction brings approximately 70 professionals with deep expertise in intelligence and cyber operations into V2X’s portfolio, enhancing the company’s position in critical national security programs.
“This acquisition enhances our position in the Intelligence Community and strengthens our ability to deliver data-enabled mission solutions across all domains,” said Jeremy C. Wensinger, President and CEO of V2X. “We are pleased to welcome this talented team and look forward to delivering greater value to our customers and shareholders.”
CAE Inc. (NYSE: CAE) (TSX: CAE) has signed a subcontract agreement with Lockheed Martin Canada to begin the implementation phase for the River-class destroyer program. Building on its contributions during the design phase, CAE is leading the development of training solutions for the destroyer’s communications and integrated bridge and navigation systems.
“Our advanced training solutions will equip the Royal Canadian Navy with world-class capabilities tailored to the specific needs of the River-class destroyer,” said France Hébert, CAE Division President, Defense & Security Canada and Global Operations Lead. “As we move into the implementation phase, we’re proud to ensure these critical capabilities are developed and maintained in Canada – strengthening national security and supporting long-term economic growth.”
