Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh convened a critical working session with the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defence to assess the progress and future direction of Vietnam’s defence industry. The meeting, held on September 27, brought together key figures including Defence Minister General Phan Van Giang, Acting Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung, and Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son, underscoring the strategic importance of the discussion.
Following presentations from the Ministry of National Defence and the General Department of Defence Industry, Prime Minister Chinh commended the achievements made in the first nine months of 2025. He emphasised the need for accelerated research and the practical application of science and technology to drive innovation within the sector. “Stronger research and application of science and technology are essential to advance the defence industry, contributing to nation-building and safeguarding,” Chinh stated, highlighting the dual role of the defence sector in both national security and economic development.
The session comes at a pivotal moment for Vietnam, as regional geopolitical tensions and technological advancements reshape defence priorities. By prioritising innovation, Vietnam aims to enhance its self-sufficiency in defence production while positioning itself as a key player in the global defence market.
The Prime Minister’s call for greater investment in research and development signals a shift towards a more technologically advanced and self-reliant defence industry. This approach aligns with broader global trends, where nations are increasingly turning to domestic innovation to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthen their strategic autonomy.
As Vietnam continues to modernise its military capabilities, the emphasis on science and technology will likely drive collaboration between the defence sector and academic institutions, fostering a culture of innovation. The outcomes of this session could set the stage for significant advancements in defence technology, reinforcing Vietnam’s role in regional security and economic stability.
