The University of Plymouth is poised to play a pivotal role in a £250 million UK Defence Growth Deal, a strategic investment that will bolster the city’s position as a hub for marine autonomy and advanced defence technologies. This initiative underscores the growing importance of dual-use capabilities—where civilian and military applications intersect—and signals a concerted effort to strengthen national resilience through innovation.
The Defence Growth Deal, announced by the UK Government, aims to forge long-term partnerships between government, industry, and research institutions in Plymouth. A cornerstone of this investment will be the University of Plymouth’s new Advanced Marine Technology Hub, designed to unite and expand the city’s expertise in autonomous marine systems, maritime cybersecurity, offshore renewable energy, and environmental intelligence.
“This investment will create unprecedented opportunities for the University and everyone living and working in our city,” said Professor Richard Davies, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Plymouth. “It shows those in charge of our nation’s defence have confidence that Plymouth—thanks to our expertise and facilities, our location and heritage—is perfectly placed to tackle the complex threats the UK is currently facing, and to inspire and train those who will be critical to its future security.”
The Advanced Marine Technology Hub will build on Plymouth’s recent designation as the National Centre for Marine Autonomy, reinforcing its role in developing cutting-edge unmanned surface vessels (USVs) like the USV Cetus. These systems are already unlocking innovation in dual-use capabilities, marine science, and critical national infrastructure support.
Beyond technological advancements, the Defence Growth Deal will also focus on strengthening local skills initiatives, particularly in STEM fields, including electrical engineering, renewable energy systems, nuclear operations, and autonomy. This aligns with the broader ambition to position Plymouth as a leader in defence, marine autonomy, and advanced manufacturing.
Team Plymouth, a strategic partnership driving the initiative, brings together government, industry, and local stakeholders to seize this transformative opportunity. By leveraging the University’s world-leading expertise and facilities, the city is set to become a key player in the UK’s defence and security sectors, while also contributing to national resilience and economic growth.
The Defence Growth Deal represents more than just an investment in infrastructure—it is a vote of confidence in Plymouth’s ability to innovate and adapt to emerging threats. As the UK continues to navigate an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape, the partnership between the University of Plymouth and the defence sector will be critical in shaping the future of marine autonomy and national security.
