Türkiye Boosts Air Defence with $460M Aselsan Systems Package

Aselsan, Türkiye’s leading defence technology company, has taken a significant step in bolstering the nation’s air defence capabilities with the delivery of a comprehensive package of integrated air and missile defence (IAMD) systems. The 47 systems, collectively valued at $460 million (Tl18.8 billion), arrived on 27 August and include long-range SİPER and medium-range HİSAR air defence systems, KORKUT self-propelled anti-air guns, ALP radar, and PUHU electronic warfare (EW) capabilities. These components will form the backbone of Türkiye’s Steel Dome architecture, a critical layer in the country’s defence strategy.

Simultaneously, Aselsan is expanding its production capacity with the foundation of its new Oğulbey Technology Base, laid by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The complex, set to become the company’s largest site, will cover 6.5 million square metres—equivalent to 900 football stadiums—and will play a pivotal role in supporting the development and production of Steel Dome systems.

“This investment marks the single largest defence industry investment in our Republic’s history,” Erdoğan stated. “And this will also be the largest integrated air defence facility in Europe.” He added, “In the next 50 years, Türkiye will not only meet its own needs but also become a country that shapes the world with its technology.”

This announcement comes ahead of DSEI UK, one of the leading global defence exhibitions, where industry leaders, government officials, and military personnel will convene to discuss advancements and forge partnerships in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape. Türkiye’s defence and aerospace exports reached $7.15 billion in 2024, a 29% increase over the previous year, underscoring the country’s growing influence in the global defence market.

The Russia-Ukraine war, now in its third year, has underscored the importance of integrated defence systems, from satellite imagery to uncrewed systems and artificial intelligence-driven operations. Aselsan’s expansion reflects the need for increased capacity to meet both domestic and international demand, particularly as European nations seek to strengthen their defence capabilities in response to evolving threats.

As the primary contributor to Türkiye’s complex air defence architecture, Aselsan is positioning itself as a key enabler for military users worldwide. The company’s investments in infrastructure and technology highlight its commitment to innovation and its role in shaping the future of global defence.
