Milrem, Frontline Integrate BURIA RWS with THeMIS UGV

Milrem Robotics, a global leader in robotic and autonomous systems, has taken a significant step forward in unmanned combat support capabilities by successfully integrating the BURIA remote weapon station (RWS) onto its THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). The collaboration with Ukrainian defence technology company Frontline has yielded a powerful new tool for modern warfare, validated through live-fire trials in Ukraine under operationally relevant conditions.

The BURIA RWS, equipped with a 40mm automatic grenade launcher, was seamlessly integrated with Milrem’s THeMIS platform, demonstrating precise target engagement at distances of up to 1,100 meters. This integration keeps operators safely out of harm’s way while enhancing tactical effectiveness on the battlefield. “This successful demonstration verifies the reliability and accuracy of the BURIA-THeMIS integration,” said Paul Clayton, Director of Industrial Partnerships at Milrem Robotics. “It highlights the expanding role of robotic platforms in improving tactical effectiveness and operator safety on the modern battlefield.”

During the live-fire trials, the THeMIS Combat showcased excellent stability and target tracking, confirming the accuracy and effectiveness of this remotely operated fire support system. The successful firing further underscores the versatility of the THeMIS platform in handling various kinetic payloads. Yevhen Tretiak, CEO of Frontline, emphasized the significance of this collaboration: “This is a vivid example of Ukrainian innovation combined with European engineering. At Frontline, we believe the future of modern warfare belongs to robotic systems. BURIA is part of our vision for a robotic frontline—where drones perform defensive and offensive operations while soldiers remain out of harm’s way. Together, we’re fast-tracking these technologies to the frontlines.”

The integration of the BURIA RWS with the THeMIS UGV represents a pivotal advancement in unmanned combat support systems. The THeMIS, already recognized as the most capable UGV operating in Ukraine, was the first of its class to be deployed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the war against Russia. Its proven reliability and adaptability make it an ideal platform for integrating advanced weapon systems like the BURIA.

The BURIA grenade launcher RWS has been in service with military units since January 2025 and is now in serial production. The system is actively integrated into combat support units through a first-in-class training program designed specifically for frontline deployment. This collaboration not only enhances the capabilities of existing military units but also sets a precedent for future developments in robotic warfare.

Further live-fire testing and tactical validation will continue in the coming weeks to assess performance across a range of battlefield scenarios. The data collected will help inform future system upgrades and potential deployment strategies. As the defence landscape evolves, the integration of robotic systems like the BURIA-THeMIS combination will play a crucial role in shaping the future of military operations.

This partnership between Milrem Robotics and Frontline exemplifies the growing trend of international collaboration in defence technology. By combining Ukrainian innovation with European engineering, the two companies are pushing the boundaries of what is possible in unmanned combat systems. The successful integration of the BURIA RWS onto the THeMIS platform not only enhances the capabilities of military units but also underscores the importance of robotic systems in modern warfare. As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the development and deployment of such technologies will be critical in shaping the future of defence strategies and tactics.
