The Indian Defence Ministry has taken a decisive step towards bolstering the country’s defence capabilities and fostering self-reliance in drone technology with a landmark ₹30,000 crore contract for 87 Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones. This strategic move underscores India’s commitment to modernising its armed forces while simultaneously strengthening its domestic UAV manufacturing ecosystem.
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved the procurement, which will be split between two Indian companies. Each selected manufacturer will establish independent production lines, not only to meet current requirements but also to accommodate future orders, including potential exports. This dual-pronged approach is designed to ensure operational readiness while catalysing growth in the aerospace and defence manufacturing sectors.
“This decision underscores India’s strategic focus on self-reliance in defence technology and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers,” said a senior official from the Defence Ministry. The initiative is expected to significantly enhance India’s surveillance, reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and precision strike capabilities, providing a critical edge in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
The procurement process will begin with the issuance of an Expression of Interest (EoI), inviting bids from qualified Indian firms. Following rigorous trials and commercial negotiations, the final contracts will be awarded to the most suitable players. This structured approach ensures that the selected manufacturers meet the highest standards of performance, reliability, and innovation.
The move aligns with India’s broader defence modernisation agenda, which prioritises indigenous development and production. By investing in domestic manufacturers, India aims to create a sustainable defence industrial base capable of meeting both current and future security challenges. This initiative is also expected to generate high-skilled jobs, foster technological advancements, and position India as a key player in the global UAV market.
As India continues to navigate a dynamic geopolitical environment, this contract represents a significant milestone in its journey towards self-sufficiency in defence technology. The integration of advanced MALE drones into the armed forces will not only enhance operational capabilities but also reinforce India’s strategic autonomy, ensuring it remains a formidable force in regional and global security dynamics.
