Russia and India have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their defence cooperation, with both nations acknowledging the strategic importance of their longstanding partnership. In a meeting between Russia’s Deputy Defence Minister Colonel General Aleksandr Fomin and India’s Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, the two sides discussed ways to further intensify their multifaceted Special Privileged Strategic Partnership.
“The meeting took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere which is traditional for the Russian-Indian relations,” the Russian Defence Ministry stated, underscoring the enduring trust between the two nations. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in the defence sphere, with both sides confirming their dedication to advancing their particularly privileged strategic partnership.
India and Russia have a history of robust defence collaboration, guided by the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military and Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-MMTC), co-chaired by the Defence Ministers of both countries. This partnership has evolved significantly over the years, transitioning from a buyer-seller framework to one that now includes joint research and development, co-development, and joint production of advanced defence technologies and systems.
Key projects under this partnership include the supply of the S-400 air defence system, the licensed production of T-90 tanks and Su-30 MKI fighter jets, the supply of MiG-29 and Kamov helicopters, the acquisition of the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya (formerly Admiral Gorshkov), the production of AK-203 rifles in India, and the development of BrahMos missiles. These initiatives have not only bolstered India’s military capabilities but also strengthened the strategic autonomy of both nations.
The recent success of India’s S-400 air defence system during Operation Sindoor, where it played a crucial role in shooting down incoming missiles from across the border, has further underscored the importance of this partnership. With New Delhi set to procure additional S-400 systems, the collaboration between Russia and India in the defence sector is poised to grow even stronger.
Meanwhile, India’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval is in Moscow, engaging in high-level discussions with Russian officials to explore further avenues for defence and security cooperation. His visit comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly as the US considers imposing additional tariffs on Indian goods due to New Delhi’s oil purchases from Russia.
As the global defence landscape continues to evolve, the India-Russia partnership remains a cornerstone of strategic stability in the region. By fostering deeper collaboration in defence technology and military strategy, both nations are not only enhancing their own security but also contributing to a more balanced and multipolar world order. This partnership serves as a model for how nations can work together to address shared challenges while preserving their strategic interests.
