A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers has introduced legislation to bolster defense technology collaboration with Taiwan, a move that underscores growing concerns over China’s military assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region. The “U.S.-Taiwan Defense Innovation Partnership Act” aims to formalize a partnership between the U.S. Department of Defense and Taiwan’s defense sector, accelerating joint research and development of cutting-edge military technologies.
The bill prioritizes collaboration on emerging defense technologies, including drones, artificial intelligence, microchips, missiles, and surveillance systems. By fostering innovation and technological exchange, the legislation seeks to enhance deterrence capabilities and maintain a strategic edge over China’s rapidly expanding military power.
“New and innovative technologies, approaches and vendors” are essential to meeting security challenges in the Indo-Pacific, said Representative Jill Tokuda (D-HI), a co-sponsor of the bill. “This bill is a step toward a free and open Indo-Pacific.”
The proposed partnership is expected to accelerate Taiwan’s access to next-generation U.S. technology, strengthening deterrence in the region. “This will be a critical deterrence tool,” said Representative Zach Nunn (R-IA), another co-sponsor of the bill.
The legislation comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Indo-Pacific, as China intensifies its military buildup and assertiveness in the region. Representative John Moolenaar (R-MI), who chairs the House Select Committee on China, emphasized that the bill would “strengthen critical defense industrial collaboration with Taiwan while enhancing our shared readiness against an increasingly threatening Beijing.”
