Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United Kingdom has set the stage for a deeper strategic partnership between the two nations, with a particular emphasis on defence, technology, and energy cooperation. The unveiling of the Vision 2035 roadmap underscores a shared commitment to strengthening ties across multiple sectors, while also addressing critical security concerns.
Modi and his British counterpart, Keir Starmer, agreed on the urgent need to combat terrorism without double standards. Modi raised the issue of Khalistan extremism, stressing that democratic freedoms should not be exploited to undermine democracy itself. “Those who misuse democratic freedoms to undermine democracy itself must be held to account,” Modi stated, reflecting a firm stance against extremist ideologies. The leaders also discussed the extradition of economic offenders, with Modi seeking the UK’s cooperation in bringing fugitives to justice.
The joint efforts to counter terrorism were further solidified through an agreement between India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the UK’s National Crime Agency to tackle organised crime. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasised that both nations recognise extremism and radicalisation as threats to their societies, pledging to enhance bilateral cooperation in this domain.
Beyond security, the Vision 2035 roadmap outlines ambitious plans for defence industrial collaboration, including co-design, co-development, and co-production of defence products. This initiative aims to meet growing demand in both countries and the global market, positioning India and the UK as key players in defence innovation.
Modi drew a cricket analogy to describe the partnership, noting that while there may be challenges along the way, India remains committed to building a strong and trustworthy relationship. “The agreements concluded today, along with our Vision 2035, are milestones that carry forward this very spirit,” he said. The roadmap covers critical areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, cybersecurity, and clean energy, with a focus on fostering technological advancements and economic growth.
Both leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based international order and the reform of multilateral institutions, including the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This reflects a shared vision for a more equitable and effective global governance structure.
As the UK and India deepen their collaboration, the Vision 2035 roadmap serves as a blueprint for a future defined by innovation, security, and mutual growth. With both nations inviting further engagement, the partnership is poised to shape not only bilateral relations but also the broader geopolitical landscape.
