Türkiye has taken a bold step in hypersonic technology with the unveiling of its first hypersonic missile, the Tayfun Block-4, at the IDEF 2025 defence fair in Istanbul. The launch marks a significant leap forward for the country’s defence industry and underscores its commitment to cutting-edge military innovation.
Roketsan, the defence giant behind the development, has introduced six new advanced systems at the event, showcasing Türkiye’s growing capability in missile and space technologies. The Tayfun Block-4, described as the hypersonic version of the Tayfun missile, is Türkiye’s longest-range domestically produced ballistic missile.
“Tayfun Block-4 achieves long ranges, setting another record for the Turkish defence industry,” Roketsan said in a statement. Weighing over 7 tonnes, this new iteration features a multi-purpose warhead designed to destroy high-value targets, including air defence systems, command centres, and other critical military infrastructure. Its introduction signals a new era in Türkiye’s strategic strike capabilities, positioning it as a formidable player in the global defence landscape.
Alongside the Tayfun Block-4, Roketsan displayed several other advanced systems, further solidifying its reputation for innovation. The Atmaca missile, now in a submarine-launched configuration with the Akata capsule, extends Türkiye’s anti-ship capabilities, boasting a range exceeding 250 km. “Equipped with cutting-edge technology, Akata will strengthen the defence of the Blue Homeland,” Roketsan stated, referencing Türkiye’s maritime security strategy.
The Gokbora air-to-air missile, with a reach of over 100 nautical miles, is designed for deployment on both manned and unmanned platforms, offering enhanced air superiority. Meanwhile, the Eren loitering munition, capable of engaging a wide range of targets, including armoured vehicles and personnel, represents a versatile addition to Türkiye’s tactical arsenal. With superior guidance and endurance, Eren demonstrates Roketsan’s focus on multi-purpose combat solutions.
Additionally, the 300 Er air-launched ballistic missile, with a range surpassing 500 km, provides a rapid strike capability for jets and armed UAVs, allowing them to engage targets without entering enemy airspace. Meanwhile, the Simsek-2 satellite-space launch vehicle, capable of deploying 1,500 kg satellites into orbit, highlights Türkiye’s ambitions in space technology, with plans for its first test launch set for 2027.
The unveiling of these systems underscores Türkiye’s strategic investments in advanced defence technologies, aligning with its broader geopolitical objectives. Murat Ikinci, Roketsan’s CEO, emphasized the company’s role as a global leader in rocket and missile technologies, noting its contributions to both the Turkish Armed Forces and international markets. “Our exports span from America to Europe, Asia to the Middle East,” he said, reinforcing Roketsan’s growing global footprint.
IDEF 2025, the 17th edition of the biennial defence fair, brings together over 1,300 domestic and foreign firms, along with representatives from 103 countries, reflecting its status as a premier platform for Defence innovation. The event, supported by Türkiye’s Defence Industries Presidency (SSB) and the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation, is not only a showcase for cutting-edge technology but also a hub for strategic discussions on regional security challenges.
The introduction of these systems at IDEF 2025 signals Türkiye’s determination to lead in military technology innovation. By expanding its hypersonic, loitering, and space capabilities, the country is reshaping the regional and global defence landscape, setting the stage for future advancements in both military and space technologies.
