### German Defence Tech Giant Expands to UK, Boosting Swindon’s Manufacturing Legacy
A German defence technology startup is bringing high-tech drone manufacturing to the UK, reviving Swindon’s industrial legacy and strengthening European security ties. Stark, a cutting-edge developer of unmanned weapon systems for NATO, will open its first overseas factory in Wiltshire, creating over 100 skilled jobs.
The new 3,700-square-metre (40,000-square-foot) facility will focus on producing advanced drones, including Stark’s flagship system, Virtus. This loitering munition boasts vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities, a strike radius of up to 100km, and a 5kg payload—making it a key asset for modern military operations.
**Defence Collaboration Deepens**
Stark’s decision to expand to the UK aligns with the 2024 Trinity House Agreement, which strengthened defence cooperation between Germany and the UK. Mike Armstrong, Managing Director of Stark UK, emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership: “Germany and the UK are world leaders in new technology. This expansion allows us to combine our expertise to define the battlefields of the future.”
Local leaders welcome the investment. Will Stone, MP for Swindon North, highlighted the town’s historical significance in manufacturing—from World War II-era Spitfires to today’s advanced drones. “This is a chance to bring back defence manufacturing to Swindon and put it at the heart of Britain’s industrial future,” he said.
Jim Robbins, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, added: “This is a major step forward in positioning Swindon as a national leader in advanced manufacturing.”
**A Boost for European Security**
The factory’s opening comes as European nations increasingly collaborate on defence innovation. By establishing a manufacturing hub in the UK, Stark is not only enhancing NATO’s operational capabilities but also reinforcing supply chain resilience across the continent.
As both countries ramp up military technology investments, this partnership could set a precedent for future defence industry collaborations. Swindon, once a cornerstone of British manufacturing, is now poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of military technology.
**Future of European Defence Tech**
Stark’s expansion signals a broader trend: as cyber threats and geopolitical tensions rise, European nations are doubling down on homegrown defence innovation. The UK, with its strong engineering and technological expertise, stands to benefit from this collaboration, while Germany’s advanced manufacturing capabilities complement the partnership.
For Swindon, this represents more than just job creation—it’s a chance to reclaim its industrial pride. As Stark and other defence innovators invest in the region, the town could become a hub for cutting-edge military technology, ensuring its place in Europe’s security landscape for decades to come.
